Orange and MARIS join hands to launch integrated digital maritime navigation

On June 17th, Orange Business Services and Maris technical expert MARIS signed a cooperation agreement to launch electronic chart display and information through the world's largest fully-managed multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) network. The system (ECDIS) provides direct digital services to navigation personnel. Through the Current At Sea solution, Orange Business Services and MARIS collaborate to harness the full potential of integrated, paperless maritime navigation and provide operational management of ships based on state-of-the-art digital chart information.
Orange Business Services has more than 3,400 VSAT-connected networks deployed on land and sea vessels in 104 countries, while providing maritime voice and broadband services through FleetBroadband and Inmarsat. The Orange Business Services network connects ships on the sea with a range of enterprise communications solutions including enterprise-grade voice, IP telephony, network optimization, M2M and video conferencing.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has established a timetable for all ships to adopt ECDIS by 2018, and legislation requires all new ships to comply with this requirement. Current At Sea is a unique combination of Orange Business Services VSAT service and MARIS ECDIS, enabling navigation personnel to efficiently meet this requirement within a limited timeframe.
Current At Sea was officially launched in 2012 and is the first and only VSAT system and dual ECDIS service to provide a fixed monthly fee. Since the introduction of a bundled flat rate package service through the Orange Business Services IP network, customers only pay a fixed monthly fee without having to pay for voice or data. The new service also incorporates MARIS Navigation Decision Support (VDS). VDS provides accurate weather and water flow data to ensure safe navigation, the most economical route, and practice has shown that it can save 4% to 8% of fuel.
MARIS Vice President Steinar Gundersen said: "The combination of MARIS ECDIS and Orange VSAT technology has created a very powerful application that not only meets the requirements of the International Maritime Organization, but also provides the best route, greatly enhancing security. And maximize cost savings through an attractive monthly payment method. At the same time, capital expenditures are not required, as the system will pay off in terms of faster route selection and lower fuel consumption."
The International Maritime Organization's ECDIS requires ships to use state-of-the-art charts and navigation information, but does not specify transmission methods. Mr. Gundersen said: "Although the electronic chart of the vessel in Hong Kong is updated by CD or U disk in accordance with IMO regulations, the technology is undoubtedly developing because the regulatory authorities have already enacted the law. The merchants believe that they have the right to connect via broadband. Received safety data.” “Consistent with the expected connectivity, we only need to transfer key chart updates, warnings and maritime information coverage services in minutes, not weeks. Any shipowner who wants to have a competitive advantage in navigation planning also You can rest assured that they are working on 'technology for the future'."
Orange Business Services' MPLS-based network enables ships to avoid public networks while accessing corporate systems, ensuring secure, real-time connectivity to mission-critical applications. The VSAT broadband connection rate is between 128 kbps and 8 kbps, and has scalability that is adjusted according to uplink and downlink transmissions.
Nicolas Roy, head of Orange Business Services' Network Solutions business unit, said: "Current At Sea rethinks business processes to improve security, efficiency and reduce costs. Customers benefit from a one-stop, fixed-rate solution that is fully electronic The navigation and communication platforms not only make their ships quickly comply with regulations, but also bring tangible business benefits."
